High inflation: An unavoidable component in Ukraine’s economic growth over 2008–2010

ICPS has published the latest issue of its periodical report called quarterly predictions, containing its updated forecasts for economic and political developments in Ukraine for the next three years. According to its economists, Ukraine’s economy will continue to grow, with real GDP rising 6.7% in 2008, 6.6% in 2009 and 5.9% in 2010

Ukraine Economy Will Grow at a Moderate Pace

The latest issue of “Quarterly Predictions” with ICPS’s updated forecast for political and economic developments over the next three years has been released. According to the Centre’s economists, Ukraine’s economy will grow at a moderate pace. The ICPS forecast is for real GDP to grow 6.5% in 2008 and 5.5% per annum over 2009–2010.

Impact Assessment of an EU-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement

ICPS has prepared a policy paper entitles "Free Trade between Ukraine and the EU: an Impact Assessment", in which Centre's experts presented their analysis of possible consequences of the FTA for a number of sectors of Ukraine's economy, positions of various stakeholders regarding the FTA and recommendations for the negotiations. This report was prepared in the framework of "Public Consultations on the EU-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement" project implemented by ICPS with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and the Local Government and Public Service Reform Initiative of the Open Society Institute (OSI).

Cultural policy in Ukraine. Humanitarian security. Language.

Education is an ICPS study that touches on key areas of cultural policy in Ukraine and offers recommendations for how to formulate this kind of policy. In the modern world, the future of a state and society depend most of all on an effective cultural policy. Since gaining independence, Ukraine has failed to put together a cultural policy that its voters can either understand or support, a policy that works for the development of the country, the integrity of the nation and a worthy future in a global world. The main conclusion of the study was that the key priority to reforming educational policy should be to develop it as a mechanism for agreeing different interests and institutional systems that can carry out this policy.

Prospects for Deep Free Trade between Ukraine and the EU

Although it is the easiest alternative in terms of implementation, a simple Free Trade Agreement that cancels tariffs on goods in addition to the conditions of WTO accession would bring very few advantages to Ukraine—and even fewer to the EU. On the contrary, although it will definitely be harder to institute, a deeper accord on Free Trade with the EU, the FTA+, could form the basis for an economic strategy that would ensure rapid growth in Ukraine.
